Dante's Inferno, all nine

The Nine Circles of Hell, in Order

Dante's Inferno sorts Hell into nine concentric circles, each one narrower and worse than the last. The order is Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Wrath, Heresy, Violence, Fraud, and Treachery. Sin gets worse as you descend, and the punishment always matches the crime — a principle called contrapasso. The bottom of Hell is not fire. It is a frozen lake.

The nine circles of Dante's Inferno in order
CircleSinPunishment
1. Limbo The virtuous unbaptised No torment at all — only a sigh, and the certainty of never arriving.
2. Lust Those who let desire overrule reason Blown forever on a black wind that never rests.
3. Gluttony The gluttonous Face down in freezing, reeking slush under a rain that never stops.
4. Greed Hoarders and spendthrifts, in equal number Shoving enormous dead weights in a circle, colliding, reversing, forever.
5. Wrath The wrathful, and the sullen The wrathful tear at each other on the surface of the Styx. The sullen lie beneath it, choking on mud, gurgling a hymn they cannot finish.
6. Heresy Heretics, and those who denied the soul outlives the body Sealed in open, burning tombs inside the walls of the city of Dis.
7. Violence The violent — against others, against themselves, against God, nature and art Three rings. Boiled in Phlegethon, a river of blood, for violence against others. Turned into thorn trees and torn by harpies, for violence against the self. Pinned on burning sand under a slow rain of fire, for the rest.
8. Fraud The fraudulent, sorted into ten stone ditches called the Malebolge A different punishment per ditch: whipped by demons, sunk in filth, planted head-down in rock, heads twisted backwards, boiled in tar, crushed under gilded lead cloaks, fused with snakes, wrapped in flame, cut open again and again, and rotted by disease.
9. Treachery Those who betrayed the people who trusted them most Frozen into Cocytus, a lake of ice, at four increasing depths.

How Dante organised Hell

The Inferno is a funnel. Nine circles, each smaller than the one above it, with the least severe sins near the surface and the worst at the very bottom. Dante's ranking is not about how much damage a sin does — it is about how much reason it required. Sins of appetite sit high up. Sins that took planning sit low.

That is why Lust is the second circle and Fraud is the eighth. Being carried away is forgivable in a way that a scheme is not.

What contrapasso means

Every punishment in the Inferno is shaped like the sin that earned it. The lustful, who were swept along by passion, are blown forever on a wind they cannot steer. The sullen, who swallowed their anger, spend eternity choking on mud. The fortune-tellers, who tried to see forward, have their heads twisted backwards so they can only see behind them.

Dante calls this contrapasso — counter-suffering. It is the single idea that makes the Inferno hold together.

Why the last circle is frozen

Most people picture the deepest part of Hell as the hottest. Dante does the opposite. Cocytus, the ninth circle, is a lake of ice, and Satan is frozen into it up to his chest, beating six wings that only make the ice harder.

The logic is exact: fire is passion, and betrayal has none in it. Treachery is cold, deliberate and still, so its punishment is too.

Which circle would you be in?

This is the question everyone actually arrives with, and it is the reason this site exists. Damnation Vacation sells a numbered, permanent plot in one of Dante's nine circles of Hell. You pay $6.66, pick who it's for, name their cardinal sin in twenty characters or fewer, and choose their circle. They get a public gravestone page with their name on it, their plot number, and a counter tracking how many days they've been down there.

The gift is a link. You send it to them, they open it and find their own grave, and then they send it to whoever they think belongs next to them. That's the whole thing.

Common questions

What are the nine circles of Hell in order?

Limbo, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Wrath, Heresy, Violence, Fraud, and Treachery — first through ninth, getting worse as you descend.

What is the worst circle of Hell?

The ninth, Treachery, reserved for those who betrayed people who trusted them. It is a frozen lake called Cocytus with Satan at its centre.

Why is the ninth circle of Hell frozen and not on fire?

Because betrayal is cold and deliberate rather than passionate. Dante makes the punishment match the nature of the sin, so the deepest point of Hell is ice.

What is contrapasso?

The principle that a soul's punishment mirrors its sin. The lustful are blown by an endless storm; the fraudulent are sunk in filth; the traitors are frozen still.

Is Limbo a circle of Hell?

Yes, the first. Dante puts virtuous non-Christians there — Homer, Socrates, Aristotle, Virgil. There is no torture, only permanent longing.

Who is in the ninth circle of Hell?

Judas, Brutus and Cassius, each chewed in one of Satan's three mouths, alongside traitors to family, country, guests and benefactors.
